If you been to any of my apartments since college, you’d know I’m pretty serious about organizing my closet. Actually, in my last three apartments, I’ve dedicated an entire room to being my closet! So I know a thing or two about how to organize a closet. Cleaning one, on the other hand, is a work in progress.
Over the years I’ve accumulated quite a lot of shit. With that I’ve accumulated tools to keeping it organized.
What you need to have a perfectly organized closet:
Extra Storage! This is a bit of a DUH statement but sometimes this minor detail is over looked. Don’t worry about buying an entire wardrobe or dresser, just grab a couple hanging closet organizers & you’ll be good to go. In college these were great in small dorm rooms & my first apartment where I didn’t have a spare bedroom that I could transform into a closet!
Clothing Racks! If you’re renting & can’t drill a ton of holes in your walls to make storage units, these are the next best thing! What initially made me want to write this post was that my friend told me she spent $100 on a clothing rack. When I told her I spent no more than $15 on any one of mine she was really annoyed. Don’t get me wrong, it’s really nice & sturdy but if you don’t have that kind of money, just go to Ikea! That’s where all of mine are from & I’ve never had a problem.
Shoe Organizers! This is a must if you have piles of shoes & nowhere to go! I have mine on the back of my door & it’s perfect for spring & summer shoes & doesn’t stick out too far. They also make shoe racks for boots which are really nice for slouchy boots that tend to fall over when your leg isn’t in it!
Shelves! Of courses extra shelving helps save space & can look super chic! I use mine for sweaters, purse & books! You can also use these to display you favorite purses or cute pictures!
Coat Rack! Don’t waste space putting bulky coats in your closet or on your clothing racks. If you don’t have a coat closet, go to Amazon & get a coat rack that can hang coats, purses & hats!
Hooks! When I first started dating Max I told him I wish I had hooks in the back of my closet to hang my purses. A few days later I had he surprised me by putting hooks in my closet for me. After that any place we’ve moved in I’ve had hooks put into my closets & it’s definitely a game changer!
Matching Hangers! Okay…they don’t have to be matching but how nice does it look when all your clothes are hanging from matching velvet hangers & nothing slipped off onto the floor??
Just follow these tips & you’ll save space & money! I’ve moved A LOT so I’ve come up with different ways to store things in different places & spaces & still make it look cute!
