Fire Keeper’s Daughter: 5/5 Def a trigger filled book. But what a book!! I loved this book. So many things going on and twists and turns that all tied together which I love because I love closure. I loved the culture, the characters and the great but unexpected ending! Trigger warnings: suicide, drugs and sexual assault.
The Friend Zone: 5/5 sobbing. Also read this BEFORE “” I did not and it doesn’t make a difference but the timing is in order and will make sense to link the characters.
Where’d You Go Bernadette: 3/5 Slooow. Was this a children’s book? The characters were so outrageous and so was the storyline. You’d think with a group of whacked town folk, a bizarre main character and a crazy storyline this would make for an interesting book, however it did not. Although, I did love the bond between Bernadette and her daughter Bee, it wasn’t enough for me to love this book.
The Bookish Life of Nina Hill: 4/5 super cute. As much as I like a rom come I liked how this books was about Nina’s life and not all about her relationship once she met someone. It had the perfect amount of friendship/family, work life and romance all wrapped in one charming novel.
You Are a Badass: How to Stop Doubting your Greatness and Start Living an Awesome Life: 5/5 anything that suggests making a vision board = 10/10 from me LOL but really any self help books that make me change the way I think for the better deserve a 5/5 from me. If you’re looking to make a change in your life but don’t know who/what/where/when to start, pick up this book!
Vladimir: 2/5 Boring. I thought it was a romance and really wanted to like it but it just fell flat for me. I almost gave up half way through but though maybeeeee something interesting was going to happen. Wrong. Also, not sure why this book was titled Vladimir when he makes all of 4 appearances in this book (one of them being the somewhat interesting part of them book, that ended up being nothing interesting) and the significance of her mentioning his reflection in the window about 64 times was lost on me.
The Beauty in Breaking: 5/5 I love books that leave me thinking when I finish them. This is definitely that type of book. It really made me think deeper about the phrase “everything happens for a reason.” Growth happens no matter what it just depends how you’re going to grow and from what. If you like Greys Anatomy, you’ll enjoy this book.
Practical Magic: 3/5 Cute. Didn’t really keep my interest until halfway in and I kept getting confused about who was an aunt a mom and a daughter LOL but it was pretty good kind of reminded me of Sabrina but more of older magic of that makes sense?
Dava Shastri’s Last Day: 3/5 I didn’t like the idea of this book. I wish I loved it because my boyfriend bought it for me but I didn’t. I loved all the characters but the plot I couldn’t get into…I just didn’t understand the point, I guess.
Olga Dies Dreaming: 4/5 Such a good book! I think this book will always be important for someone to read when dealing with race and politics. The only parts that got confusing for me were the two different narrators bouncing back and forth between present time and past.
I Owe You One: 4/5 I love this author her characters are always so entertaining and outrageous. However this character being as naïve as she was was a little irritating. The desperation to be with Ryan was a little much. I know love is blind but it was a little hard to read and then watch her get hurt because obviously it’s a rom com and I was invested.
We Are Not Like Them: 5/5 woah. So good! Different views point on race and how people (such as myself) may not understand other view points because we’d never had to go through circumstances and challenges what other races have. I loved this book and the ending really wrapped everything up perfectly.
My Friend Anna: 5/5 How does someone get away the things she did?? Of course she’s caught now but for so long…how?! The more I read the more I felt like I was Rachel and shared her anxiety. I felt so bad for her and as she went along telling the story and sharing the dates I couldn’t help but look back at my life in 2013 and couldn’t imagine what I would’ve done…because I def wouldn’t have had that kind of money during that time.
No Words: 4/5 Not as good as the other two. Still a great rom come and I loved the characters and of course the story (romcom). So cute and heart warming.
Little Fires Everywhere: 4/5 Well…there really were little fires everywhere! Such a good book. So many different family and friends dynamics.
Harlem Shuffle: 2/5 Couldn’t get into it. Kind of all over the place and didn’t grasp my attention. Characters weren’t interesting and neither was the plot which I thought would be!
Paris Apartment: 5/5 I almost couldn’t fall asleep the one night after reading this LOL it was so good and a little creepy and I still can’t stop thinking about it. Such a wild ride and I really enjoyed how all the secrets came out and how everything came to and end.
The Music Shop: 3/5 I couldn’t get into this. I liked the idea and the little stories along the way but I didn’t care for the book itself.
Good Girl, Bad Blood: 3/5 A bit slow. I wish there was more suspense and clues I could follow to make my own assumptions. The book didn’t really start to get interesting until the end when everything started getting revealed. A little disappointed considering the first one was so good, hopefully the last one is better.
I Was Told There’d Be Cake: I’ve been wanting to read this book since high school based solely on the cover and I’m so glad I finally did! It’s not what I expected but it was good and interesting. I love books that are just a cluster of essays. It’s like reading funny little stories about someone’s life, someone you don’t know but think you do because you just read an entire book of essays about their life.
How Did You Get This Number: 3/5 I do feel bad eating someone’s life but I did anyway because these stories were kind of boring. However the way she tells a story reads like dry humor which I do like it wasn’t enough to make the stories that interesting. Also, the chapter about her pets was a bit disturbing…
Layla: 5/5 Lots of mixed and conflicting emotions throughout this book. I felt like I was on a roamed coaster and never wanted to get off. I love how the author really makes you fall in and out of love with the characters she creates as if you’re actually inside the book. I can’t stop thinking about this book and everything o felt while reading it. Yes, it has a controversial plot and many triggers but I feel like a good book should push the boundaries and leave you thinking about it long after you’ve set it back on the shelf. Which, I believe, all of her books that I’ve read so far have done to me.
The Kindest Lie: 3/5 Didn’t have that great of an impact on me that I thought it would. There were two such big ideas going on and I’m the end they kind of fell flat for me. They were both dragged out for so long and then quickly wrapped up at the end I wish they told more of a story.
Love at First Spite: 5/5 I haven’t read a rom-com in sooo long and it felt so good. I was smiling along from start to finish. I’ve mentioned before I love enemies to lovers and this followed that plot perfectly!
